Three Signs Your Closet is Not Working For You

When our closet is a place of frustration, it makes getting ready everyday super hard. Nothing seems to work, we get overwhelmed, maybe turn to shopping, and things still don’t click completely. We keep repeating the cycle and the battle in our closets rages on. Here are a few of the warning signs that you’re closet isn’t working for you and what to do about it.

  1. You’re Overwhelmed

You feel overwhelmed every time you look at your closet - your closet should be a place of ease, like you’re chatting with friends, if it’s not, it’s too chaotic and you need to edit

What to do? An edit is absolutely necessary. Your life & your closet aren’t connecting. You need to do a quick inventory of what lifestyle activities you’re doing from day to day and then look at clothes you have to see if they are aligning with your lifestyle. Have you had a weight fluctuation? A job change? A baby? If you have, you are unearthing a new chapter in your life and a new version of you is blooming. The pieces you had before these moments may not be serving the new you. But the only way to tell is to try on and edit out pieces that don’t fit, aren’t for the current season, or make you feel bad about yourself. From there, you can develop a list of potential pieces to bring in that will help you in this new chapter. You can read more about why having too much in your closet causes overwhelm here.

2. Invites, vacations, dinners give you anxiety

You freak out every time you have to pack a suitcase, get invited to dinner, or an event - you have no idea what to wear when or how.

What to do? You have to practice forecasting - outfit planning is a great place to start- quickly jot down a couple of upcoming events or weekly activities you do - then think about “what do I want to put on?” - if you get overwhelmed by this - I have a step by step guide for you here.

3. you keep shopping

You keep shopping shopping shopping - you’re trying to fill some “void” like shopping for groceries without a list on an empty stomach - you don’t know what you want and you wind up with a bunch of random things. Some work, alot don’t.

What to do? Moodboard - create a “want list” and play first then slowly fill in gaps with pieces that feel like they’re missing when you’re trying to put together an outfit. This will lead to more intentional purchases when you’re shopping and more closet cohesion.
