How to Decide Whether to Keep or Edit a Piece of Clothing

When it comes to trying to get rid of clothing, it can be super overwhelming to know where to start. I work with clients all the time, who have a hard time letting go, so you’re not alone. It’s part of that emotional connection to things that a lot of us fall prey to. But, there are some steps you can take to start to slowly edit out pieces of clothing, a bit at a time, so you can begin to get more clarity in your wardrobe and actually love (and wear) what you have in there! Here are the steps to figuring out whether to keep or edit a piece of clothing.

All pieces featured are from the Evereve Spring Collection - use code ARTINTHEFIND15 to get 15% off your first purchase, when you create an Evereve account.

Step 1: ASSESS YOUR CLOTHING

Trying on your clothes is A MUST. It allows you to FEEL emotional one way or another about a piece.  If the thought of a big edit makes you feel overwhelmed, try a seasonal closet edit, and take it one category at a time

Example:

Day 1: one hour, category: Tops

Day 2: 30 minutes, category: Denim

Day 3: 30 minutes, category: Dresses and Skirts

STEP 2: ASSESS YOUR FEELINGS:

Look at yourself in the mirror. Ask yourself as you’re trying on the piece:

  1. How do I feel? Positive or negative

  2. What three weekly activities would I wear this for?

  3. Does it align with my personal style?

  4. If it were gone tomorrow, would I miss it?

  5. Can I find a few different ways to style it?

  6. Does it still fit?

  7. Can I alter it to make it fit my body better?

STEP 3: ASSESS YOUR ANSWERS

Create a KEEP group and and EDIT group. If all your answers above are positive, put those pieces in the keep group. If there are pieces that don’t feel positive or you’ve answered mostly “no” to, put those pieces in the edit group. There might be some pieces you aren’t fully ready to let go of yet (whether it’s an emotional attachment, life change, or weight fluctuation) you can store those in a bin or garment bag, labeled, and assess them again in 6 months time.
