10 Fall Outfits + Starting My Fall Capsule
I took a look over the weekend at some of my favorite fall outfits from last year (I usually keep a “fall outfits” folder on my phone) and I pulled 10 outfits that I can’t wait to recreate this year. My main goal in doing this is to see which pieces I can’t wait to wear so I can use them to begin a Fall Wardrobe Capsule.
My Fall Capsule Wardrobe Guidelines
My definition of Capsule Wardrobe doesn’t mean I am narrowing down my closet to only a certain amount of pieces but rather, I highlight the pieces I wear the most and create outfits around those pieces, however many there may be. It usually does end up working out to be a handful of bottoms, double the amount of tops/sweaters, limited layers and a few accessories I swap in/out.
Here are a few guidelines I use to I bring pieces into my fall capsule:
The piece is versatile (I wore it in a lot of photos and still love the look of the piece)
I assess bottoms first to make sure I have handful of bottoms that vary in style, type, color that can pair with at least two or three tops or sweaters (I have a blog post about developing a Capsule Wardrobe here.)
There is a blend of neutrals and prints that are in similar color palettes so I know I can mix/match them (I add in my non-capsule pieces as the accents with pops of color and prints)
My Fall Capsule Wardrobe for September/October…
This is a list that can be ever changing but so far, here are a list of my main items as part of my fall capsule wardrobe:
Layers + Tops
Camel Cashmere Wrap Coat (similar option here)
Herringbone Blazer (This investment piece has been one of my most worn pieces)
Black Velvet Blazer (I have one vintage YSL blazer from Paris + a Michele Jacket from Sezane)
Striped Sweater (2) (Leontine Jumper + Striped Turtleneck Sweater, I’m also going to incorporate this Betty Cardigan as a top and layer)
Sold Out NYC Black Tee (use code CONNITWENTY for 20% off)
Bottoms
Wide Leg Jeans (Paige Anessa Jeans)
Black Straight Leg Ankle Jeans (These are super comfortable)
Kick Crop Flare Jeans (Isola from Citizens of Humanity)
Shoes
Ballet Flats (My favorites are from Flattered)
Brown Loafers (I ordered these Elba Loafers in the Espresso - CONNI15 15% off)
White Boots (I got mine on sale at Shopbop last year)
Accessories
Clare V. Grande Fanny (link to bag)
Clare V. Checkered Poche (link to bag)
The looks included here are my “moodboarding” looks. Outfits and pieces from last year that I love and can’t wait to rewear. The thing about a capsule is that you can change it, adjust it, and rework pieces or pull pieces out that aren’t working. So while I’ll use this as my guide, it may shift as I add a few pieces in. For example, I just ordered this Jim Coat from Sezane, as I think it’ll make a great layering piece. When it comes, I’ll see how I feel. I know the color will work with my capsule pieces and I can build it in, it’ll just be a matter of how I like it when I see it in person. So the takeaway here, is that you don’t have to set your capsule in stone. It can fluctuate. But if you start to train yourself to take the time to review pieces ahead of time, build a moodboard around some of those pieces or photograph yourself in them, you’ll be much more prepared when the season comes to build outfits out of pieces you love!
