Personal Style | How to Identify it, Love it, and Create Your Own
Personal style and how to learn to love yours was a topic at a recent women's event I spoke at last week. And what a fascinating discussion it was!! It made me realize that so many of us struggle with identifying our own personal style. So, I started unraveling the mystery of why that is, how you can identify it, learn to love yours, and create a personal style all your own.
How to Create and Love Your Own Personal Style
The first thing to understand is that your personal style will evolve throughout the years. How you dress in your twenties shouldn't stay the same in your 30's, 40's, and beyond. We transition through different phases, whether it be college, jobs, weight gain or loss, babies or not, etc. Each of these transitions allows us to look at our daily lives and ask, "Am I dressing accurately for what's going on in my day to day?"
Lifestyle and Creating Your Personal Style
Lifestyle is different for everyone. And you must dress to meet the needs of yours! It's important to keep that in mind. We tend to get easily swayed by what we see on social media and then we get lost. What this means about your personal style is that you should look at your closet and take note of what's in there to see if it represents what's useful for your daily life activities.
What kind of lifestyle do you have? Is your lifestyle mostly casual? Are you a stay-at-home mom? Maybe you work in a corporate job or a laid back work environment. Your personal style and wardrobe need to reflect your daily activities. For example, if you've recently retired, your wardrobe shouldn't be filled with workwear. If you've lost/gained weight, the items that no longer fit shouldn't be taking up space in your closet.
Identify Your Personal Style in Three Words
What are three words that you associate with your style?

These three words to describe your personal style need to be at the top of mind when it comes to navigating your personal style identity. Here is a helpful post I wrote about defining your style that will guide you. Do the pieces you want to purchase fall within the realm of your three personal style words? Do they meet the needs of your daily life activities? Spending the time to identify what three words are your three personal style words will help to create a cohesive wardrobe.
Three Personal Style Questions You Must Ask Yourself to Ensure You'll Love Your Own Style
Personal style is all about how you want to present yourself to the world, out in public, on a daily basis. So, keep these three questions in mind when putting something on, pulling something out of your closet, or making a purchase.
Do I feel comfortable?
Am I confident?
Is this piece sending the message that I want out into the world?
If the answer to these three questions is a Y.E.S. you will, no doubt, love your style. You will be achieving what most of us struggle with daily. You will get rid of items that don't meet these three criteria and it will leave you feeling like you are making the right decisions for your own personal style, not for anyone else.
