Wide leg jeans and flare jeans have this strange stigma amongst women.  It's as if skinny jeans have resonated so strongly in our fashion culture, that we can't think of wearing anything else.  Funny though, wide leg jeans and flare jeans are some of the styles of denim that I would highly recommend to many of my clients.  Why?  Let's take a closer look.

Five Reasons You Should Consider Wide Leg Jeans

You know who's the queen of rocking the wide leg jean and flare jeans?  Rachel Zoe.  That's right.  That women wears wide leg jeans and pants more than any other human on earth.  Why is that, do you think?  She is the master at working the height angle and wide leg jeans do that for her small frame.  That's the beauty of wide leg jeans.  They're not just for the small frame, they work on a variety of body types, from the petite, to the athletic build, to the curvy.  Wide leg jeans are our friend!  Thank goodness they're coming back into the mainstream this season.  I couldn't be more pleased.

1 | Wide Leg Jeans work well on women who are petite (5' 4" and under)

Say hello to the jean that gives you all the height in the world.  Paired with a tweed blazer and a top with a quick tuck, you'll look like you're 2 to 3 inches taller.

2 | Wide leg Jeans help to mask larger hips

For those curvy + plus size ladies out there, wide leg jeans, pants, and trousers are your friends.  They should be your best friend, actually!  They help mask the curve between your waistline and your thigh and when worn with a front-tuck top or top that hits at the widest point of your hips & a cropped jacket, you are doing yourself so many favors!

3 | They help you look taller & more streamlined

When paired with a pointed toe (which is also coming back hard core this year) flat or heel, this gives the eye the illusion of height and elongation. You can also opt to wear them with a rounded wedge shoe as well.  (I'd still lean more towards the pointed toe version, it's a classic.)

4 | They are All-Age appropriate

From 20-70, I'd recommend wide leg jeans and flare jeans to just about any women.

5 | They come in all lengths and styles, so your options are almost endless

If you're still on the fence, here are some tips for making the wide leg jean and flare jean styles work for your body type

  • Try them on in the store | I cannot stress the importance of trying on jeans in the store before purchasing.  See this post as to why...If you're ordering them online, that's a different story.  Bottom line, try them on, see if they fit well.

  • Have them altered for YOUR legs |  When you initially purchase jeans, they're not cut for your exact leg length, so it's best to pay $12-20 dollars (or if you're a Nordstrom Card holder, it's free..) to have them fit you perfectly.  A few sleek lengths: just barely grazing the floor (wear with mules, wedges, or heels), at your ankle bone (wear with pointed toe flats), or mid-way between the bottom of your ankle and foot (wear with a kitten heel).  Whatever you do, do not allow them to bunch on the ground! *Note, I had these jeans altered after photos, taken up 2 inches and love them!

  • For a sleeker look, choose a darker wash

  • Give different lengths a try | If you're a fan of wearing heels, you can try a low to mid rise with a cropped flare at the bottom, which if you're petite, will give you some rise.  Some longer lengths work well on women with wider hips, and some cropped lengths look better on gals with athletic or petite builds.  Do yourself a favor and try at least 3 different styles to get the best wide leg jean fit for you.

With all that said, I do hope you give wide leg jeans a try this season.  I'd love to hear your thoughts, the good, bad, and ugly, for what has worked or not worked for you!
