How to Find the Right Denim Shorts + 3 Easy Weekend Looks in Denim Shorts
When the season warms up, denim shorts become a staple in my closet. I swap out straight leg jeans for a pair of my favorite Agolde shorts. Wearing shorts can sometimes be a struggle if you’re trying to figure out what works for your body type. Trying anything new takes practice and adjustment, so know that it may take some time to find the pair you love. But knowing some of these measurements will be helpful for finding a pair of shorts that suits your body type so you have a little more direction. (Plus, I filmed a helpful video here on Instagram for you!)
Finding Your Measurements
Step one to finding a pair of shorts that fit well is understanding your silhouette but also having a few numbers to back up your shape. There are a few points on your body to consider when narrowing down the shorts search. They are:
Waist/Natural Waist - measure your natural waist/waist (where the “crease” is when you bend) from left to right (across, not around) and write that number down.
Hips - Measure the widest point of your hips from left to right (again, across from seam to seam if you’re wearing pants not around) and write that number down.
“A”- Curvy - If those measurements differ by more than 4” then the “curvy” shape of your silhouette will have you looking for shorts (denim or otherwise) that have an “A” or curvy shape to them. These will have a more cinched in waist and a broader/looser leg shape.
“H” - Straight - If your measurements are 4” or less apart, then you’re looking for a straighter shape denim short or otherwise. Meaning when you hold the shorts up, the waist and hips, make almost a straight “H” shape.
If you’re finding that your wearing shorts that cut too much into your waist and are too baggy around the hips, it may be that you’re a straight shape trying to fit into a curvy fit pair of shorts. If you’re finding that the shorts “gape” too much in the back and are too tight in the hip, it may be that you’re a curvy shape/silhouette trying to fit into a straight pair of shorts. The trick is in holding the pair of shorts up and seeing if they’re an “H” (straight waist to hip) or “A” shape (nips in at waist and A’s out) and compare to your silhouette to find a match. It will take time so be gracious with yourself. And if you want to have some help, book a 50 minute virtual style session and we’ll go over it together.
Inseam - The last measurement is an important one as well. Inseam is important because that’s how high or low the shorts will hit your leg. If you’re not familiar with rises, usually websites will list the inseam length. I also take a measuring tape with me when I’m out shopping (hey, I’m a stylist!) and I encourage you to do it too.
If you have broader, more athletic thighs, opt for a longer inseam of 4-5+” or greater. And look for a looser, wider leg fit. You will have to go through various options to find the one, yes.
If you have less broad thighs and want a more conservative longer length, you can also opt for a 4+” rise
If you’re petite with shorter legs, you may want to opt for a 3” inseam so the length of the shorts will work better with your proportions.
Rise - I filmed a video here showing you how to measure your rise and inseam in jeans so the same “rules” apply when measuring rise to find shorts.
Three Casual Elevated Denim Shorts Outfits
How do you wear denim shorts but elevate them? You can do that easily with a great top and a fun shoe. This is where getting dressed for spring and summer become a lot more fun. I’m using pieces from Evereve, a brand I’ve recently become an ambassador for and they’re offering a discount code for you through Sunday, the 27th. Use code ARTINTHEFIND15 for 15% off.
1 | Halter Tank, Layered Sweater, + Detailed Sandal - You can see this look in the Instagram Reel. The pieces I’m using are the Agolde Parker Long Short (These have a slightly straighter fit, an 11” rise and 4 5/8” inseam. They fit slightly loose on me, I sized down) paired with the Dolce Vita Indy Slide (I sized up 1/2 size, the rope cross is slightly fitted across the foot) and layered with the Stitches and Stripes pullover (this has stretch, so I sized down). The Michael Stars ribbed tank is perfect as a base layering piece. Fits true to size.
2 | Ruffle Cami Top - I swapped out the top here for a fun detail on the shoulder. This outfit is easy, relaxed but perfect for a spring/summer weekend. The Roan + Ryan ruffle cami fits true to size. It’s 100% cotton, so you can wash it but lay it flat to try and give it a quick steam before wearing.
3 | White ruffle top + Birkenstocks - If you’re looking for something a little more coverage on the arm, this comfortable, detailed Remi Prim tee is perfect. It fits true to size and it’s 100% cotton, made in Peru. I paired it with a pair of Silver Arizona Birkenstocks (tts) for an easy daytime look.
4 | Stitches and Stripes Pullover - For those cooler spring/summer days this cotton pullover is perfect. You can wear it alone, over a tee, or as a layering pieces on the shoulders. It has some give and stretch to it, so consider sizing down. It’s great tucked in or worn as it, sleeves pushed up for some elevation, of course!
Notes on the code: ARTINTHEFIND15 for 15% off. You can use my discount code on Evereve’s site through Sunday, the 27th. If you’re a first time customer, you’ll have to create an account for the discount to apply. Shipping is free over $50.
