How I Overcame My Fear of Overalls
I remember in middle school when my parents purchased my first pair of overalls for me. They were big, they were baggy, they were very 90's. Come to think of it, wasn't everything big, baggy, and large in the 90's? Hammer pants? Shoulder padded blazers? Yes, I rocked the 90's sized overalls. Heck yes I did. And I rocked them with abandon. Then, they faded away as most trends tend to do. So last year, as I watched overalls return to the style scene, I laughed. Hard. All I could think about were those storied overalls from my middle school years. And I just couldn't take them seriously. I'm sure some of you are still thinking that now.

How I Overcame My Fear of Overalls
I'm not going to tell you that you're wardrobe will be better off if you buy a pair of overalls. Nor will I tell you that you're totally missing out on the style trend and oh woe is you. But what I will say is that I have jumped into the overall swimming pool and I love the way I feel in them. The difference with these overalls vs. the 90's pair I rocked in middle school is 'fit'. When making a decision about whether or not I should buy them, I considered how they fit before I made the purchase. Did they hug my hips and my bum just right? Did they feel comfortable?
I love that I can wear something that's just a bit different from my everyday pair of jeans. I love that they hit right at my ankle and that they are a high rise fit. I can wear them (and have three days in a row?!?) with a pair of flats and a short sleeve top, a 3/4 sleeve striped top and booties, and then with a long sleeve top and heels. Versatility is important to me when it comes to buying a piece of clothing. And these Madewell drop hem women's pair hit the mark.
Now that I'm no longer in middle school and paying more attention to how overalls should fit, I'm more confident wearing them. I'm overcoming that 90's oversized fear and opting for a pair that fit like a great pair of jeans. No doubt, you've given a glance or two to the overall trend. But maybe you've been a little too nervous to try overalls because you think you'll look silly in them. Let this be a note of consideration, maybe just maybe you can overcome your fear and pull them off too.
Around the web and on Instagram, I've come across a few other gals who have styled their overalls into everyday looks. My hope is that you seeing different ways to style overalls on other women, not just on me, will inspire and motivate you to give them a try. Consider me an overall convert. But don't think you'll be seeing me wearing them with one strap dangling down anytime soon. Some trends shouldn't be repeated for good reason...
Everyday women wearing overalls a few different ways
One of my favorite gal pals, Natalie, of Natalie Borton Jewelry (and blog, Thoughts by Natalie) absolutely swears by these Madewell overalls. She was actually the inspiration behind my purchase. She rocks them with oxford flats and a striped top. Now, who can't pull that together?? Proof that you can wear overalls and flat shoes!
I love the way that Nicole, of A Styled Love Affair styled her overalls with a pop of color in her sandals and an adorable long sleeve eyelet top. One thing that works well with overalls that are skinny-ish on the bottom is wearing a looser fitted top along with them. It creates great balance, like Nicole's overall outfit here!
I love the way that Kaylee from The Blondielocks wears her overalls. She's got them rolled up, worn with a ruffled top, and wedge sandals, which is a casually delicate and totally functional.
