Over the next couple of weeks, I'm going to be talking about some of my favorite fall trends that I've been seeing and trying. Some, meh, not so much, but others, yes, oh yes, I highly recommend you try. This week, we're starting with a super soft fabric trend that I've been seeing high and low. That lushish trend would be velvet.

A Candid Take on the Velvet Trend
Alright, I admit, I'm a fan of the velvet trend. There really is no denying a deliciously soft fabric that kind of melts all over. I know, I know, velvet?? I do remember both seeing this fabric on my mom and wearing this fabric as a child in the 80's. If only my mother would have saved all of her velvet dresses, what an amazing array of outfits I'd have this season, right!?!
Velvet has been in the fashion scene for aaaaaaages and rightfully so. A stunningly luxurious fabric, it's been on the historical timeline as far back as the 13th century in China. Velvet made its rebirth during the Renaissance (one of my favorite time periods) and was a fabric that the wealthy used as an expression of power & taste. Today, velvet has made its way back onto the fashion scene. It has cycled back around, as a lot of trends do, and is everywhere from velvet shoes to cropped velvet blazers.
Early this month, I nabbed this light pink (almost neutral) velvet dress from Anthro and have to tell you, I've worn it 5 times already and each time have gotten compliments on it. I say this because I think that it's so true, that velvet is making a fierce comeback. If you've been thinking of dabbling in said trend, there are a few ways to give it a shot a) without breaking the bank and b) with subtle pieces that you can blend into your wardrobe.
Which Velvet Trends Should You Try?
Other than this new favorite crinkled velvet dress of mine, there are some other fabulous velvet pieces that I would highly recommend you give a try. Here are 3 basic suggestions for mixing and matching velvet pieces, from a velvet dress to a pair of velvet slip ons.
- 1 || the velvet dress || both the velvet slip on and velvet tunic are great choices when it comes to picking a velvet piece to invest in. You can layer a dress with a cropped jacket and pair with a fun shoe such as a d'orsay shoe for a great casual weekend outfit.

- 2 || the velvet blazer or top || this is the perfect wear-to-work and weekend piece. You can pair this with a white tee and jeans for a weekend look and then wear it with a great pair of patterned pants, a pencil skirt, or a dress for work.
