Polka Dot Vest and Midi Skirt Outfit

This polka dot vest from Loft is at the top of my wardrobe list.  When the weather turns cool, vests are continuously in the rotation.  Quilted vests make the perfect top layer to any outfit. And when it comes to incorporating one, what better way to do so than layering with a chambray top.

This polka dot vest from Loft just may be my new favorite layer.  The story of my relationship with vests is a loving one.  If you think about it, the vest is such a perfect piece for adding a cute layer to your outfit along with keeping you warm.  And if anyone knows me well, I get. cold. often. (My mother-in-law can attest as she has gifted me many a cold weather layer.)  Vests are my wardrobe bestie.  What about you?  Do you love vests as much as I do?  If not, maybe there are some underlying reasons why....  Here are a few things to remember when picking out the right type of vest for you!

  • When picking out a vest go for a tailored look.  Tailored lines are a good thing when it comes to vests.  Some vests without any tailored lines tend to look really bulky.  If you're worried about adding too much bulk, opt for a vest with tailored ribbing, like this polka dot vest from Loft or this J. Crew quilted vest (a cult favorite).  This effect helps to create a more structured appearance without all the bulk.  Yay for tailoring!

  • Pattern is Pretty | The key to a quality-looking vest (or outfit paired with a polka dot vest) is to keep an eye out for good, wearable patterns.  Some of my favorite vests patterns can be found at Anthropologie, Zara, and Shopbop.  It's fun to play with patterns, but here I'm wearing a subtle chambray with a patterned vest.  Think about doing something versatile with a plain vest; wear a patterned top underneath for a pretty pattern pairing.

  • Think about the Material, girl! | Not all vests are created equally. No kidding, right?  For some, faux fur vests are just right.  For others, a cable knit vest will do the trick.  When picking out a vest this season, try on different material types to find out which one compliments your body type.  (You want it to curve at your waist and drop at or just below your hips.) Maybe it's just a bit of shearling on the collar of a tailored moto vest that's just right for you or a quilted polka dot vest for more texture.
  • For an added style effect, belt your vest at your natural waist!
