How to Edit Your Closet From Summer to Fall in Under 30 Mins
Tips for Switching Over Your Summer to Fall Pieces in Under 30 Minutes
Now that it’s fall, it is time to reassess your closet and reorganize it for the current season. The best way to make your closet feel ready for a new season is to do a quick closet edit. If you’re feeling daunted by the prospect of trying to organize your entire closet all at once, there’s a better way to start. Here are my tips for switching over your closet from summer to fall in under 30 minutes.
1 - HAVe THE RIGHT STORAGE ON HAND
Plastic containers, garment bags, and a labeler are the three most important tools for getting ahead start on your edit. If you have a place to put things and a label to smack on it, you’ll will you feel better prepared. And you’ll know what’s what when it comes time to store them away and break them out again next year.
2 - start with Storing or editing just the ‘season specific’ pieces
If you get really overwhelmed with trying to do a whole edit at once, just focus on storing away ‘season specific’ pieces. Season specific pieces for summer (if you’re prepping your closet for fall) are things like; dresses, sandals, lightweight tees/tanks, bathing suit cover ups, things that won’t be worn for fall because they’re too summer specific. Go section by section (dresses first, sandals next, coverups last..etc), decide to store or edit (see the video for questions to ask to decide or read this post here to help you.)
WHY IS IT GOOD TO STORE AWAY LAST SEASON’s CLOTHES?
If you are wanting to create a minimal, streamlined closet, that makes getting dressed easier, than it’s best to store away pieces you’re not wearing. “Out of sight, Out of mind” is a good mantra! One of the reasons why some people get dressed quicker than others is that they have less to pull from and/or the items have been edited so they’re only pulling from a selection they’re going to wear for today or tomorrow.
WHAT STEPS DO I NEED TO TAKE BEFORE I PUT MY CLOTHES INTO A BAG OR BIN?
We get sweat and dander build-up over time on our clothes, so it is best if you wash or clean your clothes before storing them away for a few months. After you clean them, store your clothes away with cedar balls or lavender sachets to keep the bugs/moths away.
3 - MOVE NEXT SEASON PIECES FRONT AND CENTER
After you’ve edited out or stored away your last season’s pieces (summer), now is the time to create some ‘focus areas’ in your closet for the next/current season (fall). Fall is all about layers, sweaters, heavier knits, bottoms, and shoes. Move those pieces front and center to get more wear. The same goes for shoes. Rearrange your fall shoes (boots, booties, oxfords, flats) at eye to hip level so you are more likely to grab them. If you have a shoe rack, place them in the center so they’re easily reachable.
4 - COLOR COORDINATE YOUR PIECES FOR VISUAL HARMONY
Not only does color coordinating your clothing look better visually (and creates great garment harmony) but you can also see which colors are the most dominant in your closet. Color coordinating your clothing also allows you to better mix/match your bottoms, tops, layers together.
