Three of My Favorite Wardrobe Foundation Layers

Whenever I’m asked about how to elevate an outfit, the answer always comes back to, layers. Plain and simple, having the right layers makes any outfit instantly look more put together. This is a point I touch on in most of the style classes so I thought I’d share what my favorites are.

The Denim jacket

If I was on an island and had to take only one layer with me, chances are it’s going to be my denim jacket. I just can’t get enough of a great jean jacket and I consider it a staple in my closet. I have two, a darker denim jacket from j.crew that I bought when I was 22 and this lighter version, the Merly jacket, from ABLE. I love this version because even though denim can sometimes feel really stiff, this one is quite the opposite. It’s somewhat lightweight and feels quite soft, if denim can be described that way. It’s made in Mexico and feels like it’s made to last. (Use code ARTINTHEFIND25 for 25% off of the Merly Jacket).

THe moto jacket

Another all time favorite is the moto jacket. A moto jacket transcends style genres and can be an evergreen investment piece in anyone’s closet. I almost always recommend a moto jacket to any client who is looking for a versatile layer that you can wear three out of four seasons. My first moto jacket was a honey colored leather jacket given to me by my husband 8 years ago and I still have it to this day. Last year, I finally bought an off-black version from AllSaints and I love it.

The Trench Coat

I’ve had versions of trench coats over the years, some lightweight, one lined with a bit more heft. When I came across this trench from Sezane, this was the “meet right in the middle” version I had been looking for. It’s beautifully structured without feeling overly stiff. And the length is perfection. I wear this most days when I’m looking to layer over a lightweight sweater and jeans. A trench gives you that Parisian chic vibe with a touch of classic masculinity. It’s just perfect.
