5 of the Best Places to Eat in Austin

You may remember back in September that my husband and I took an 8 day road trip through some great U.S. cities.  It took me a while after our return to compile all of the culinary notes I took while we were road tripping.  But, I've finally caught up with my notes and photos to give you a great snapshot of where to eat in Austin if you're planning a visit.

PLANNING THE TRIP

If you've been to Austin, want to go there, or live there currently, you may have some favorites like I do. Hanging out there, it's easy to add to the list of a million things to do.  If you want to hear some music, head to the good ole' Continental Club.  It's one of Austin's oldest music venues.  You'll find that not only is Austin centered around music, it's also one of those cities that loves food.  I love traveling to places that have a great options for food.   It really doesn't get much better.

If you haven't been to Austin but are planning a trip, you've got to try some of their famed airstreams! Here are some of the best places to eat in Austin. Jump over to the blog to read more!

WHERE TO EAT IN AUSTIN

We were told a great number of things and offered many a suggestion for where to eat at a brick and mortar place in Austin.  We found quite a few to say the least. Yes, there are plenty of restaurants to try but one of the main attractions are the Airstream food trucks.   Grab some food from one of the many Airstreams and you'll be in culinary heaven.

  • Need some fried chicken?  Try Ms. P's Electric Cock.  Interesting name, great fried chicken!  Totally worth a trip or two.
  • BBQ from a Truck?  We stopped by la barbecue, which was already sold out, so I thought it wise next time we're in town to try and hook up with Austin Eats Food Tours.
  • Coffee? You've got to try Jo's, which happens to be a stone's throw from Hotel San Jose.  What to order at Jo's?  Try either a Vanilla Latte or their Iced Turbo.  If you need a strong coffee fix, I'd suggest the latter.
  • Josephine House, in the cute neighborhood of Bouldin Creek, which might as well have been named the Jespersen House because I almost moved right in there.  It was the perfect mix of quaint, clean, marble.  Try their champagne cocktail, served with a strawberry garnish.
  • Contigo.  This outdoor casual dining place is a great place to go with friends or on a date.  And it's pet friendly!  White lights strung from trees over picnic tables?  Yup.  A great visual place to be.  What to order?  Their rabbit dumplings are out of this world.  They've got a great small plates section on their menu and I'd recommend the white bean dip duck fat and parsley and the pork shoulder with Thai basil.
  • Seafood & cocktails?  Head to Perla's.  A bit pricey but they have a great happy hour and the ambiance & decor are worth it.
  • We also made our way to Franklin BBQ, which is famed for some of the greatest BBQ in Austin.  But the line was crazy long and they sell out after....well, they sell out, and that could be an hour or two....so we didn't end up trying the BBQ.  We just weren't feeling the need to spend our time waiting in line.
