Layering the Perfect Fall Outfit
I love when the seasons change because that means a closet clean out and prep for a new fall outfit or two. However, starting to dress for the new season can often be challenging because it's hard to know where to start. It's cooling down and you want to add layers but stay stylish. Here are a few tips to help you navigate the fall outfit questions you might be wondering about when it comes to layering!
DETERMINE WHAT FALL OUTFIT PIECES YOU NEED TO LAYER
- BASE LAYER: Determining what new fall outfit pieces you'll need starts with a quick peek into your closet. Do you have a silk top, a cotton button down, something with a collar and long sleeves? Are they in good condition or do you need a few new ones? If you're looking to invest in a few new tops, starting with one in a plain color (white, black, or blue) and one in a patterned style (stripes are so so classic) is a good rule of thumb.
- MIDDLE LAYER: Sweaters are a natural choice for a fall outfit pairing. Layer a sweater over a long sleeve top. For maximum style impact, roll the sleeve of the top over the sweater so a bit of the cuff pops out. One great color rule for layering (especially when you want to mix and match patterns like a style pro!) make sure your bottom layer top and your middle layer sweater have at least one color similarity. This will help the outfit blend seamlessly together!
- TOP LAYER: We all have experienced that transitional weather month where it's not quite cold enough for a big jacket but not quite warm enough to go without a top layer. One brilliant idea for a great layered fall outfit is a pairing your top layer with a capelet or cape coat. Cape coats were a huge hit last fall and it's no doubt we'll be seeing them again this season. Cape coats are an effortless addition to your fall outfit without the heavy burden of a big jacket.
