Pregnancy Outfits that Will Keep you Stylish During Your Pregnancy
Admittedly, learning how to pull together pregnancy outfits is no small feat. When I started to grow an actual bump and couldn't fit into my regular clothes any longer I had to google how maternity sizing even worked?! Having finally made myself a bit more familiar with it, I then had to navigate what felt comfortable and what didn't. (ie: body con dresses (which I don't wear regularly when not pregnant) were a definite yes and jeans with low slung (even though maternity) waist bands were a not really.) Nothing says uncomfortable more than something pushing against your lower belly!
There were a few places and people I turned to (which I'll cover in a moment) to get on the right track when it came to cute pregnancy outfits. I curated a Maternity Style Pinterest board to also help as a source of inspiration (which I highly recommend). And from there, it was a matter of trying things on to see what worked best and playing around with proportion and accessories.
Tips for Creating Stylish Pregnancy Outfits
What makes one pregnancy outfit cuter than another? What makes cute maternity clothes wearable throughout a pregnancy? Here are a couple of things to consider:
- Basics || Maternity basics such as leggings, anything with stripes (ie: striped dresses, fitted, high waisted, maxi), cardigans, jackets, oversized sweaters in colors such as black, white, grey, cream, olive green, & navy, are great pregnancy basics to invest in. You'll wear them before, during, and post pregnancy.
- Proportion | ie: layers, sizing, etc. || If you want to ensure you'll avoid the frumpy feeling (because let's face it, there will be times of feeling frumpy!) it's a matter of fit and layering properly. Believe it or not, the cutest pregnancy outfits have an element of fitted coupled with an element of loose layering. (See example here) Maternity tops, dresses, and bottoms that work best have some give around the mid-section (ribbing, rouching, etc.) to allow for stretch yet, are form-fitted. Once that is achieved, you can add a layer (ie: cropped jacket, army jacket, cardigan, blazer, that isn't restrictive, yet creates balance and comfort. (See examples here and here). Any layer that falls over the tummy just so, is cropped right at belly level, and/or has some structure to it, will work perfectly to create a beautiful balance of fit and proportion.
- Accessories || There are some amazing tote bags, backpacks (that dub as cute baby bags), and amazing diaper bags themselves that we mamas can use for everyday/kiddo bags!
Where I've found the Best Casual & Cute Pieces to Create Great Pregnancy Outfits
I've found that unless a piece is an absolute basic (see basics above) it's really not worth spending more than $100 on pregnancy fashion. You can find maternity dresses, maternity clothes for winter, spring, summer, and fall all well under $100. The only cute maternity clothes that I found I paid more than $100 for were two pairs of maternity denim. I know I can resell the pieces afterwards, so for the denim, I wasn't too disappointed. Here are my favorite online brands for cute and casual pregnancy outfits.
Dresses
- Lauren Conrad
- Yumi Kim
- Old Navy
- Eliza J (this non-maternity dress has the elastic back and I love this maxi dress (order a size up))
- Isabella Oliver (I have this striped dress and love it)
- Matron Saint (body con/fitted dresses)
Denim/Leggings/Overalls/Shorts/Workout leggings
- Ingrid & Isabel (boyfriend jeans, workout leggings, shorts)
- Madewell (denim, skinny jeans)
- Jojo Maman Bebé (overalls)
Tops
Undergarments
- Free People (bralettes for sleeping, love this one)
- Madewell (no-wire bras, I opted for a large as they fit very small)
- Lively (maternity and bralettes)
10 Must Have Pregnancy Outfits to Wear for a Stylish Pregnancy
Counting down from 10 to 1, here are the 10 must-have pregnancy outfits that will get you through your pregnancy, whether winter, spring, summer or fall. Within the outfits, I'm incorporating the maternity pieces that you should add to your wardrobe to create these cute, casual, and all around everyday pregnancy outfits.
Outfit #1 || The Striped Dress
There is nothing more classic than a great striped dress. As far as pregnancy outfits go, this is by far one of my favorites. A fitted (aka: bodycon) knee-length striped dress can easily be layered with a jacket (like this green army style one) a sleeveless vest, or a cardigan. In the summer, you can opt for a sleeveless dress, or 3/4 sleeve, in the winter, a long sleeve and layer with tights and booties. This is all around one of the most classic of casual maternity outfits.

Outfit #2 || Leggings and an Oversized Sweater

Whether pregnant or not, who doesn't love a good outfit that consists of majorly comfortable leggings and an oversized sweater? This is one outfit that will get a lot of worth for wear, especially in the cooler fall and winter months.

Outfit #3 || A Jumpsuit and a Denim Jacket
Jumpsuits and jumpers have been so so popular this season and there are some really great ones out there. Most however, aren't designed with the mama-bod in mind, so it was quite a challenge to find a couple that worked. Oh, but once I did, it was pure bliss. This jumpsuit, from Ingrid & Isabel is just the perfect fit. It's breast-feeding friendly and the fabric is so comfortable. Yes, you have to keep in mind the intricacies of navigating the restroom but this cute pregnancy outfit (paired with a simple denim jacket) is totally worth it!

Outfit #4 || Overalls
Whether short overalls in the summer or long overalls in the spring, fall, or winter, overalls are by far one of my favorite pregnancy outfits. Anything that overs but doesn't squeeze the baby bump is alright by me! Some of my favorite looks from mamas are overalls and a striped shirt (if I was pregnant in the fall, I'd rock this cute pregnancy outfit day in and day out).

Outfit #5 || A Floor Length Maxi Dress
[show_shopthepost_widget id="3221769"]
Oh if the almighty maxi dress doesn't just strike again! I love a good maxi dress pregnant, not-pregnant, it goes every which way. I cannot speak enough to the flattery (make sure to nail the right one, stay away from jersey knit, which shows alll things...) of a great maxi. Especially for pregnancy outfits. With maxi dresses, you don't have to shop maternity specific. Just make sure that the back or high waist band has elastic. Then shop in your pre-pregnancy size or opt for one size up (if you've grown in the chest area...). This is probably the one category, other than denim, that I would say it's okay to spend above $100 if you find a good maxi dress.

Outfit #6 || A Shirt Dress & Casual Shoes

This look is great during the first and second trimester! Shirt dresses with a high waist tie, help to emphasize that growing baby bump in a very cute way. Shirt dresses are usually available year-round but really make an appearance in spring and fall. You can layer a denim jacket over it and pair it with casual tennies or cute wedges.

Outfit #7 || Denim & A Sleeveless Top
Apart from navigating the denim world during pregnancy (this was probably my biggest challenge when it came to pulling together pregnancy outfits), I realized towards the second and third trimesters that I was lacking in tops as my belly grew in size. So I turned to Asos Maternity for affordable tops and Madewell for comfortable maternity denim. Asos maternity tops are great because not only are they great for a gal on a budget but they are also pretty trendy too.

Outfit #8 || Denim & A Blazer, Sleeveless Blazer, or Other Layer with Flats or Kitten Heels

When I was newly pregnant, one major style source for me was Louise Roe. She was also pregnant, farther along than I, but I gravitated towards her stylish denim style. She was a genius at layering and she created some amazing pregnancy outfits. These outfits are perfect for fall, winter, and pre-spring style. Some of my favorite maternity denim have come from Madewell (Louise is wearing the maternity cali-demi style jean from Madewell.).

Outfit #9 || High Waisted & A-Line Dresses of All Types!
[show_shopthepost_widget id="3221555"]
[show_shopthepost_widget id="3221726"]
In the summer, it goes without saying that dresses are such a saving grace for pregnancy outfits. But it takes a bit of finagling to work out which ones fit best. Some overall tips are:
- look for dresses with elastic/stretch/give in the back
- try to avoid dresses with buttons and zippers in the back
- make sure the waist is high enough to come above the belly, right below the chest (seems high but it works)
- or the opposite, little or no waistline is also very comfortable (no restriction to the belly!)
Old Navy and Madewell are really saviors when it comes to finding budget or trendy pieces that are also comfortable. There are other amazing brands out there, such as Doen, Hatch, ....but those beautiful pieces will run you upwards of $200+ and considering you have to sometimes go up one size, it may not be worth it to invest during pregnancy.

Outfit #10 || Basic Tee, Jeans, and Tennies & Athleisure Wear
photo | could I have that

You can look cute and comfy during pregnancy, while sporting athleisure wear or jeans and a basic tee. It's all about keeping those leggings, joggers, or jeans, at ankle length, sporting a great pair of slip-ons, Converse, or your favorite tennies. Keeping the bottom layer (either top or bottom) fitted, then throwing on a loose layer over (ie: loose button down or layered cardigan) the top is the trick.
