How to Wear a Peplum Top
Peplum is your friend. Peplum is my friend. Heck, peplum can even be your best friend's friend, it's that good. And here is why. First, let's talk about what peplum actually is. Peplum tops date wayyy-way back to Greek and Roman ages with Peplos, a dress-like garment that women used to sport all over Athens and Rome. It usually involved some sort of cinching at the waist, giving the lay-days a bit more definition. I mean, no one wanted to walk around in a sack cloth until the end of their days. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to.
So into the bar walks Peplos and Peplos says, hey, I wanna tighten things up around here! And you know what? Who knew that a little waist cinching could go a long way. A lot of good that did for women everywhere! And over time, with the confluence of fashion, fashion designers, and style, came a nipped slightly style top with a flare at the waistline. And everyone was introduced to the new and improved peplum.
But Conni, you say with exasperation, I've tried on a peplum top and it doesn't look good on me. Well, to that end I say to you, Try, try again. One big problem might be that you haven't found the right fit. How do you find one that is the right fit? My advice to you is that to find the right fit, it's all about the right length. There are plenty of poorly made peplum tops out there, with a flare so short, I would have only worn them out to a college bar when I was 21. And 21, I most certainly am not any longer. So with that, I look for peplum tops that have a longer torso fit and a longer flare.
Here are the benefits of learning how to wear a peplum top. (numbered, in my very limited amount of French I learned while abroad...) un. It not only gives you definition at your waistline but a peplum top is superbly feminine. Wear one to work? You betcha. Out on a date? absolutmon! deux. A peplum top looks great on ladies who carry weight around their hips (or not), around their waist (or don't), and pretty much everywhere else. So case in point, the peplum top suits a great deal of body types. trios. learning how to wear a peplum top doesn't have to be that complicated.
Here is how to wear a peplum top to make sure it's the right fit. The waist hem (where it cinches in) should be just at your natural waist (where your waist is the most narrow, which is different for every women) and the flare should fall directly at the widest point of your hip or lower not any higher than that or you'll be feeling deflated and emailing me telling me I was wrong. So as to avoid any potential email disasters, aim for the hip!
Now, armed with all that newfound peplum knowledge you have, will you give a peplum top a try? Oh, and if you're following me on Instagram, on Monday, I'll be doing a little giveaway of this darling clutch from Pepper B Designs!
